The Jersey cattle breed originated on the English Channel island of Jersey, and was first recorded as a separate breed around 1700 in England. A small breed of dairy cattle, Jersey cows are known for the high butterfat content of their milk, superior grazing ability, and extremely docile temperament that makes them a perfect family cow.
Jerseys naturally produce the highest quality milk for human consumption. A glass of Jersey milk has greater nutritional value: 15% to 20% more protein, 15% to 18% more calcium, and 10% to 12% more phosphorous, and also considerably higher levels of an essential vitamin, B12. This nutrient-dense Jersey milk tastes better. The reason is there are more solids-nonfat, protein, calcium and lactose in her milk compared to other breeds. Compared to average milk, Cheese-makers make 25% more cheese from Jersey milk and butter-makers increase yields by over 30% – both at a lower cost per pound of product.
Fun Fact: The average Jersey cow in the United States produces 53 pounds of milk per day which is equivalent to about 6.2 gallons.
Ginger is our registered Jersey cow. Ginger just had a boy calf on June 6, 2020. We are milking her twice a day and getting about 8 gallons per day from her. She loves spending her days on our pasture eating green grass. She has a wonderful, friendly personality.
