The first seed order from Johnny Seeds has arrived this week at Charmingfare Farm. Sowing of the seeds into the seed trays is under way in the greenhouses. We have always had the best luck by ordering the majority of the seeds used at the Charmingfare Farm from Johnny Seeds. If you are purchasing seeds to plant in your gardens at home we would strongly recommend you buy from Johnny Seeds. This seed company is located right here in New England in the state of Maine.
Right now at the farm you can see the cover crops we planted last fall starting to green up a bit during these warm days. Guest’s visiting Charmingfare Farm during Maple Express have comment on how green some of our patches are out on the fields. We explain those are the areas where grow the vegetables for our CSA programs. The green patches are the winter rye we sowed last farm to protect the soil. Before you know it it will be time to transplant all the seedlings in the fields. There will be plenty of work ahead preparing the fields for the transplants.
Below is list giving you a idea of what vegetables are being started over the next week so. Planting a variety of different kinds of veggies gets everyone an opportunity to try new things. We always plant everyone’s favorites as well. There will be plenty of fresh vegetables ready for the first pick-up on May 24th.
