Evaluation Process

Determining Pond Volume

One of our tasks was to measure the volume of water in the Charmingfare Farm Pond. The reason we needed this information was so we could make educated decision about the size pump we would need for circulating the pond water. Also, knowing the amount of water in the pond, would be needed if we were to add any kind of natural product to try to control the algae. We accomplished this task by measuring the perimeter of the pond and the depth at several points in the pond.Having found this information it was possible to calculate the volume.

This task involved the work of several students. Over the course of several hours, we had two students stand on shore holding a tape measure creating a straight line across the pond. In a canoe, three students took measurements every 5 feet and recorded the water depth. I myself wrote down the measurements during one of our work sessions. I was hot and a little wet but overall it was a good experience for all of us. We got most of the measurements and had a pretty good time doing it.
