Oxen...are steers which are used for work, very much like draft horses. They are much stronger than horses, and usually calmer as well. There are many breeds of cow that can be used as oxen.
Oxen have been used for many jobs. They can plow fields, pull logs, remove stumps and pull wagons. In fact, the pioneers used oxen to pull their wagons across the country.
Here at the farm we have two oxen, Beau and Luke. They are a mixture of two types of cow, Brown Swiss and Holstein. Although theses breeds are typically used as dairy cattle, their steers also make good oxen.
Oxen are hitched together by a wooden frame called a yoke. This allows them to work together and to pull very heavy loads.
