CATTLE
Cows... have
been an integral part of human life. They provide us with meat, clothing, milk, and cheese. There
are many types of cattle, but they can be
divided up into two categories, dairy and
beef.
A grown male is a bull, a grown female a
cow, an infant a calf, and an animal between
one and two years old is refer to as a yearling.
At the farm we have a Jersey dairy cow named Layla. Jersey cows are originally from the Isle of Jersey, were brought to the United States in 1657 by early immigrants. Their average weight is about 900 pounds and each produce about 40 pounds (5 gallons) of milk per day. Their milk is notably higher in calcium, protein, butterfat, and nonfat milk solids. Their milk is highly valued by cheese makers.
We also sometimes have calves from the Holstein Breed, the black and white cow most children at familiar with.
We also have Scottish Highland cattle for a
beef breed at the farm. As you may have
guessed, this breed originated in the Highlands
of Scotland. Because
they are from such a harsh environment, they
don’t need much in the way of care or
shelter. They are most noted for their
long shaggy hair covering.
